There was once a woman who married in her prime, a
good man. She was unknown to the dynamics of marriage but that man made her
believe that marriage was easy. She trusted him and they married. Then she came
to his home and they lived together. And then she became a good wife. She
cared for his mother and for him. She loved them, she had to. That's what
everyone told her. Be a good wife. Be what you are expected to be. And that is
what she became.
She then bore him two children. A young girl followed her elder son. And she thought she had a happy life. He ensured that she believed that. She now took care of a family of five and she was happy. Her son grew up and was fast becoming a young man. Her daughter was growing too. She was a proud mother.
And a proud wife. She knew the family was going through some trouble regarding money. With the bills to pay and the children's education to look after for. But her husband was a good man. He didn't let her worry much. He said everything was okay and that it was. And she believed him. Why fight the man who knew better? He had after all ensured their safety before. All these years of marriage and there was never much trouble.
One day he left for work like usual. She was busy running after the children making them eat. Then she went to her mother-in-law to check on her. And she spent rest of the day working like a good wife and mother. And that is when she noticed that he had left his wallet behind. She then found his phone. And then his car keys. Only his umbrella was missing. A clear deviation. But he would return. Like he has been doing.
Evening sneaked in through the door. She waited. Half glanced at the road outside. Night came and went by. He was not home yet. Morning came. And many mornings went by. But she waited some more. With tears. With hope. So did her children.
Her husband was a man of words and a father. Such men do not deceive. They are men bred of virtues. And she understood her truth in that. So when men clad in uniform came to ask her about him, she faced those questions like a woman scorned. No. They never fought. No. They hadn't had money problems. At least not any to concern people outside their marital bonds. Yes. She knew he was happy. And many such questions came. And many more uniforms.
Three months have gone by since I heard of this woman. And of the husband who deserted her.
She now has dry tears running down her face. She lives in ignorant faith. Even though her son is angered at the man's cowardly desertion. And the girl, she fights to keep memories. But the woman, she still waits in vain for everyone told her he was a good man.
